Customer Background
Why motor choice became decisive for a precision-planting equipment maker.
Our customer is an Argentine manufacturer of automatic seeder systems serving the country’s large-scale agriculture sector, where planting precision and machine reliability directly shape yield and grower profitability. Across diverse regions — from soybean and corn belts to wheat operations — seeding equipment must perform consistently under dust, humidity and constant vibration. Safety-related control functions on this class of machinery are governed by ISO 25119, the agriculture-specific extension of the machinery safety framework.
As farms consolidated into larger fields and planting windows tightened, the customer needed a drive that could hold uniform row spacing and seed depth while running maintenance-free through narrow seasonal windows. Legacy brushed drives could not deliver the combination of precise speed control, sealed durability and low lifecycle cost the customer required. Upgrading the drive also moves the efficiency baseline: the IE classes used to compare options on farm machinery are defined by IEC 60034-30-1.

The Challenges They Faced
Three field-level problems pushed the customer to re-evaluate the seeding drive.
AVariable field conditions
- Changing soil resistance caused uneven seed dispensing and inconsistent row spacing.
- Dust, humidity and vibration shortened the life of open, brushed drives in the field.
- Narrow planting windows left no margin for brush wear or commutator downtime.
BPrecision & lifecycle cost
- Inconsistent speed control reduced crop emergence rates and overall yield. Seeding accuracy is a documented yield lever in FAO guidance on precision seeding and conservation agriculture.
- Brush replacement and service costs eroded total cost of ownership.
- Mechanical wear introduced drift in seed depth and spacing over a season.
Products & Solution Adopted
Greensky supplied the GSBLD44 brushless gear motor family, combining a high-efficiency BLDC motor with a precision gearbox for seeding duty.
BLDC Gear Motor GSBLD44R10D12
Brushless DC motor paired with a robust precision gearbox for smooth low-speed power.
44P51K Gearbox
Matched planetary/helical reducer delivering uniform torque under varying soil load.
Sealed Field Construction
High-quality bearings, optimized thermal management and sealed housing for outdoor duty.
The GSBLD44R10D12/44P51K delivers consistent torque output and stable speed control, enabling automatic seeders to hold uniform row spacing and seed depth across changing soil resistance. Eliminating carbon brushes removes a primary wear point — a decisive advantage during compressed planting seasons — while the integrated gearbox provides high torque at low speed for even seed metering. Compact sizing lets the motor drop into modern seeding equipment without adding weight or complexity. Duty classification for a drive that works only through a compressed planting window follows IEC 60034-1 rating and duty types, and where the drive participates in a safety function its control path is specified to the performance level required by ISO 13849-1.
How We Implemented It
A phased rollout from agronomic requirements to field-proven production.
Agronomy workshop
Joint session defined target row spacing, seed depth, speed envelope and field-environment ratings.
Prototyping & bench test
GSBLD44 iterations validated torque stability, thermal behavior and speed regulation on Greensky benches.
Field trial
Units ran across Argentine soybean, corn and wheat regions for a full planting season to confirm reliability.
Sealing & durability release
Sealed construction and bearing spec released for production tooling; IP rating verified.
Mass production & JIT
Ramp to seasonal volume with just-in-time delivery synced to the customer’s planting-window build plan.
Results Achieved
Measured against the customer’s pre-upgrade brushed-motor baseline.
By holding uniform spacing and depth, the seeder improved emergence and overall yield while removing brush-service downtime during critical planting windows. The maintenance-free BLDC drive lowered lifecycle cost and let the customer scale output across Argentina’s diverse farming regions without adding field-service burden.
What The Customer Says
The GSBLD44 gave our seeders the consistent torque and speed control we couldn’t get from brushed drives. Spacing stays uniform across tough soil, and with no brushes to service we keep running straight through the planting window.
